Busy School Day

We had a busy day at school today. Mrs. Wishy Washy came to visit all morning in kindergarten. She was scrubbing the kids! She was looking for her cow, pig, and duck in the gym during breakfast. Those animals are always playing in the mud. We made books with the characters from the book, and moved them to the mud and tub as we told the story. We used a toothbrush to scrub the animals.

We made butter yesterday. We passed around two baby food jars filled with cream. Everyone got a turn to shake them. We got to taste the butter on Maria "Galletas" this morning. Everyone had thirds!

In first grade we finished our unit on shrub steppe habitat (sage and grass high desert we have here) by watching a Burrowing Owl on a wildlife webcam. We got to see it come out of it's burrow. The burrows are dug by badgers. The students have been coloring a drawing of shrub steppe animals in their habitat that I got from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. We also got to see a bluebird sitting on eggs on a webcam. She left the nest while we were watching, and we got to see three eggs!

The second grade teachers gave us a few caterpillars from their butterfly science kit unit. We have had Painted Lady butterflies all week. Today they gave us eggs that their butterflies layed on a hollyhock leaf. We were excited to see the whole life cycle. I let the butterflies go today at home. I had let the ladybugs go just before the butterflies emerged.

Our test scores were due today. My kinders got 92 and above on their math test in English. Eighteen students scored 100%. Only one new student from Cuba got a low score. I am very proud of my second language learners who went from 18 - 28 to 100 points this year.

The Peace Corp matched our class up with a volunteer in Ecuador. We got our first letter from him last week. We were studying the rain forest, and he lives in a rain forest! The students asked lots of questions, and this week we got the anwsers plus some pictures! One picture showed him holding a monkey. Very cool. School is fun!
